Debra Ann Poates Perry, age 67, passed away unexpectedly from a sudden illness on March 29, 2026. Born on September 29, 1958, Debbie lived a life centered on love, family, and the simple joys that brought warmth to those around her.
Debbie dedicated many years of service to Spotsylvania County as a school bus driver and later retired from Massaponax High School, where she worked as an office assistant. Her true passion, however, was in cosmetology. A lifelong licensed hairdresser, Debbie found great joy in helping others look and feel their best, making beauty her calling as well as her craft.
Debbie was the devoted wife of Mason Elwood Perry Jr., with whom she shared a loving marriage since August 16, 1980. Together, they built a life over nearly 46 years, weathering both the peaks and valleys with strength and devotion.
She was a proud and loving mother to her son, Joseph Perry and his wife Andrea; and her daughter, Marie Johnson and her husband Eric. Her greatest joy came from her role as “Nana” to her three cherished grandchildren, Brady, Bryce, and Wyatt. She found immense happiness in watching them play sports, listening to their laughter fill her home, and treasuring the light they brought into her life each day. Her grandchildren truly made her days brighter.
Debbie is survived by her two brothers, Carl Poates (Lisa) and Scott Poates (Jane), along with a host of nieces, nephews, and long-time friends who will remember her kindness, warmth, and enduring spirit.
She was preceded in death by her father, Percy C. Poates, Jr. (Grace), and her mother, Helen Petry (John).
Debbie’s life was a testament to the importance of family, love, and togetherness. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
