The Atlanta Falcons announced on Wednesday that they hired Fredericksburg native and James Monroe High School graduate Jeff Scott as their assistant general manager.

Scott, a 2004 JM grad and former standout quarterback who went on to play for Davidson College, was previously the vice president of football operations for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Falcons General Manager Ian Cunningham, a former University of Virginia football standout, said in a statement that Scott “brings a breadth of experience across all football operations and a keen eye for talent.”

Scott was in the Eagles’ front office during the 2024 season which ended in the franchise’s second Super Bowl championship.

Scott began his front office career in the NFL as a salary cap intern for Washington. In that role, he assisted with cap analysis and contracts before he became a scouting intern. He worked as a player personnel assistant in 2013, and then became a pro scout the following year, working in that role until 2017.

Scott was promoted to director of football strategy/scout in 2018, preparing weekly analysis for the advanced scouting of opponents. He also evaluated players for free agency and the draft. He was hired as Washington’s assistant director of pro scouting/advance coordinator in 2020, overseeing the weekly advance scouting of opponents. He was also responsible for evaluating and writing player reports on free agents and other professional leagues and evaluating potential trade scenarios during the draft.

In 2021, Scott joined the Eagles as a senior pro scout before he quickly earned a promotion to director of football operations and then vice president of football operations.

Cunningham thanked Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman for granting permission to speak to Scott about the Falcons’ assistant GM position and advance his career.

“We are thrilled to have Jeff become a member of our team,” Cunningham said. “While Jeff and I worked together in Philadelphia for a short period of time, I quickly realized he is a man of integrity, he has a high degree of attention to detail and discipline, while always treating everyone with respect. His values align with ours, as does his mission to help build a team that consistently competes for championships.”

Scott wasn’t immediately available for comment.

He isn’t the only Fredericksburg area native who will be working for an NFL team next season. In addition to a handful of players from the region expected to be on rosters, King George County native Ryan Smith was hired by the Dallas Cowboys to coach their secondary.
