  • A bagel business that has developed a loyal following at the Spotsylvania Farmers Market in the past couple of years is coming to downtown Fredericksburg. Water & Barley is planning to open a location at 529 Caroline St. in the next couple of weeks. “Time to put this Bagel Debate to Bed!!!” Water & Barley wrote on its Facebook feed. Stay tuned for more details on the opening and the shop.
  • Downtown Fredericksburg business Art Time 4 Kids was sold this week, according to a Facebook announcement. Longtime owner Claire Ellinger sold the business to Art Time teacher Julia Migliaccio. Ellinger said in the post that she plans to continue teaching middle and high school classes at the Hanover Street business.
  • The University of Mary Washington’s annual Mary Wash Day this spring raised $1.3 million to support the school. A total of 2,577 donors made 3,579 gifts during the ninth-annual event, which was held March 25-26.
  • The City of Fredericksburg is reviewing the major site plan submitted last week for the re-development of the former Mary Washington Hospital building at 2300 Fall Hill Ave. Plans for the roughly 280,000-square-foot structure call for 242 apartments, a coffee shop and day-care facility, and related site improvements including a park.
  • FFP report: The Stafford Planning Commission last week recommended denial of a data center project south of Eskimo Hill Road in central Stafford after almost two meetings’ worth of questions about the historical significance of the 99 acres on which it would sit.

  • The City of Fredericksburg is considering changes to the William Street corridor between Sunken Road and Washington Avenue with an eye toward traffic-calming, enhanced pedestrian and bicycle access, on-street parking, better lighting and more. A community meeting is scheduled to discuss the initiative from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. June 17 at the Dorothy Hart Community Center.
  • Longtime Fredericksburg real estate investor Tommy Mitchell is the guest on this week’s edition of the Biz Beat Banter podcast. Mitchell discusses how he first got involved with downtown real estate investing, how the market has evolved during his decades-long career, and more.
