Investigators say the device was designed to look like part of the ATM while secretly capturing customers’ card information, allowing thieves to remotely download the stolen data using Bluetooth technology and potentially create fraudulent cards.
Anyone who recently used the ATM is urged to carefully review bank and credit card statements for unauthorized transactions and report any suspicious activity to the sheriff’s office. Authorities also recommend inspecting ATMs, gas pumps, and other card readers for loose or unusual parts before inserting a card and covering the keypad when entering a PIN.
Sheriff Scott Moser said skimming devices are becoming increasingly sophisticated and difficult to detect, making it important for residents to stay vigilant and report suspected fraud quickly. The investigation remains ongoing. Photos courtesy Caroline Sheriff’s Office
