Community Canvas is excited to announce a new community art initiative in Found, a pop-up arts workshop inspired by the assemblage work of 20th century sculpture Louise Nevelson.

Nevelson, who was born in Kyiv, Ukraine in 1899 called herself the “original recycler” because she made much of her work out of found materials.

Community Canvas is an art advocacy project that seeks to serve underrepresented members of our community. It was founded by Javonne Kirby in 2023 while she was serving as the vice-chair for Downtown Greens. Kirby held the initial workshops during community food distributions organized by the Fredericksburg Food Bank.

Community Canvas invites members of the greater community to join in this art initiative which will be held at Market Square on May 1, 2025 from 12:00-4:00 p.m. The public is invited to bring object(s) under 8 x 10” that they are willing to contribute to the collaborative art making project.
