Tonya Lacey, the first Black woman to serve as Fredericksburg Clerk of Council, is retiring after 33 years with the city.

Lacey’s retirement will take effect in September. The city announced her impending departure with a statement on its Facebook page, citing her “vital” role in preparing and maintaining the official records of the city.

“The City of Fredericksburg is incredibly grateful for her contributions, which serve as the professional link between the citizens, the local governing bodies and other government agencies at other levels,” the statement read … “She has been a steady hand in the legislative process and a symbol of progress and representation in our local government.”

The city is now accepting applications for Lacey’s replacement. For more information or to apply, visit https://www.fredericksburgva.gov/216/Employment.
