Walker-Grant Middle School in the City of Fredericksburg was one of 220 schools from 38 states across the country selected to receive a $5,000 grant through the Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries. This year, the Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries awarded over $1 million in library grants.

According to W-GMS librarian Mrs. Emily Moore, with their $5,000 grant, Walker-Grant Middle School will purchase graphic novels, books in other languages, and update their essay collection.

“A well-funded school library encourages students to develop a love for learning that extends beyond their school years,” Moore said in a release from the school division. “Thanks to grants like the Laura Bush Foundation, we can continue to provide essential resources to enhance our school library and inspire a passion for reading and intellectual curiosity that lasts a lifetime.”

Added the former First Lady: “Books have the power to spark curiosity and inspire lifelong learning. We are thrilled to provide these grants so that librarians can refresh their shelves — opening the door for students to discover new interests and endless adventures.”

“We are deeply honored to receive this grant from the Laura Bush Foundation,” said Marci Catlett, Superintendent of Fredericksburg City Public Schools. “As a lifelong educator and woman of faith, I’m thrilled to see our new Walker-Grant library filled with books that will inspire, encourage, and reflect the promise within every student.”

The Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries supports school libraries with the greatest needs with the goal of encouraging all students to develop a love of reading and learning. Since its inception in 2002, it has awarded $23 million to over 4,000 schools across the country.
