Next month, the City of Fredericksburg will introduce additional school-zone speed enforcement cameras. In a news release, the city stated that the cameras, which will be installed near the new Walker-Grant Middle School, 2201 Idlewild Boulevard, will “encourage drivers to follow posted speed limits and create a safer environment for children.”

During a 30-day warning period from Aug. 18 through Sept. 19, violations will result in warnings rather than citations. Specific warning period dates will be announced and posted at https://bit.ly/fxbgpolicesafety.

Following the warning period, live ticketing will begin. As permitted by state code, violations captured by school-zone speed cameras are subject to a $100 civil penalty. [Code of Virginia 46.2-882.1]

In addition to installing enforcement cameras, the city has reduced the speed limit on Gateway Boulevard from 35 mph to 25 mph between Route 3 and Idlewild Boulevard. This change was made to improve safety along Gateway Boulevard. When the school zone is active, the speed limit will be further reduced to 15 mph.

Additionally, the speed camera zone for Hugh Mercer Elementary was in live ticketing for summer school activities through Friday. The zones for Hugh Mercer and James Monroe High School will continue issuing citations when the regular school year begins Aug. 18.
