The Stafford Sheriff’s Office says deputies recently responded to a report of an in-person scam in the South Stafford area. The victims reported that two males came to their residence claiming to be employees of Dominion Energy. They said there had been a power surge and they needed to inspect the home’s electrical panel.
The Sheriff’s Office says after a fake “inspection,” the suspects told the victims their home was at risk of burning down unless immediate repairs were made. They convinced the victims to write a check for the supposed repairs. The check was cashed, and the suspects have not been seen since.
The Sheriff’s Office says scammers rely on urgency and fear to pressure victims into acting quickly—before verifying the situation.
Protect Yourself:
-
Ask for credentials. Legitimate employees will always carry ID.
-
Call the company directly. Use the official phone number, not one provided by the person at your door.
-
Never make on-the-spot payments to unsolicited visitors.
-
Trust your instincts. If something feels off, it probably is.
