The Caroline High School football team continued its strongest start to a season since 1987 with a 42-7 Battlefield District homecoming victory over James Monroe Friday evening.
On the night he was crowned homecoming king, senior quarterback Blake Morris rushed for 132 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries, including a 74-yard scoring run on the third play of the game to set the tone.
Morris also scored on a dazzling 32-yard run, evading tacklers and zig-zagging through the Yellow Jackets’ defense.
The Cavaliers (5-0, 2-0 Battlefield) rushed for 272 yards and five touchdowns. Senior running back Tre Coles recorded 60 yards and a score on the ground, while diminutive junior rusher Dre Coleman picked up 52 yards, including a 39-yard sprint that gave the hosts a 35-7 lead in the fourth quarter.
Caroline’s defense forced four turnovers, with defensive backs Chris Giles, Blair Morris and Ethan Tenorio each intercepting a pass. Tenorio returned his pick 31 yards for a touchdown to provide the contest’s final margin.
Senior defensive end Angelo Toure was in on three sacks for the Cavaliers, who host Eastern View next Friday.
James Monroe (3-2, 1-1) got its lone score on a 57-yard bomb from backup quarterback Ryan Wolfenbarger to receiver Oneil Oussantidja in the fourth period. The Yellow Jackets visit King George next Friday.
Colonial Forge 49, Stafford 7
Brock Brimhall threw for 301 yards and three touchdowns as the Eagles remained unbeaten with a Commonwealth District romp over the host Indians.
Brimhall completed 12 of 19 passes and connected with Jake Ashinhurst on scoring strikes of 67 and 22 yards. He also hooked up with Torie Martin for a 25-yard touchdown.
Ashinhurst had four receptions for 120 yards, and he also threw a 57-yard scoring pass to Martin.
Martin finished with two catches for 82 yards, while also rushing for 57 yards and a touchdown on seven carries.
TaySean Jones added four receptions for 108 yards for the Eagles (6-0, 2-0 Commonwealth), who will host Brooke Point next Friday.
Stafford (3-3, 1-1) is on a bye next Friday and will return to action with a home contest against Massaponax on Oct. 17.
Courtland 47, Chancellor 18
The Cougars’ dynamic trio of Tyrik Newman, Chieftain Watson and Ahmari Boxley overwhelmed the visiting Chargers in a Battlefield District win.
Newman ran for 120 yards and a touchdown on 13 attempts, and Watson passed for 107 yards and three scores — all to Boxley.
Boxley recorded 80 yards on three catches.
E.J. Fleming chipped in 52 yards and a pair of touchdowns on eight carries for Courtland (4-1, 2-0), which welcomes Spotsylvania next Friday.
Chancellor (0-5, 0-2) will host Culpeper next Friday.
Massaponax 40, Mountain View 28
The two-headed rushing attack of Joe Sanders III and Brian Henderson combined for 295 yards and five touchdowns to buoy the host Panthers to a Commonwealth District victory.
Sanders III amassed 171 yards and three scores on 16 carries. All three of his touchdowns came in the first half, fueling a 21-7 Massaponax advantage at halftime.
Henderson finished with 124 yards on 14 attempts. The second of his two scoring runs extended the Panthers’ lead to 40-7 early in the fourth quarter.
As a team, Massaponax racked up 422 yards on the ground.
The Wildcats got strong performances from multiple players in defeat. Bryce Lambert completed 16 of 18 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns, both to Aaron Campbell. Amari Collier rushed for two scores, and Chris Gordon had two receptions for 96 yards.
Mountain View (2-4, 0-2) will welcome Riverbend next Friday, while Massaponax (3-2, 1-0) hosts North Stafford.
North Stafford 27, Brooke Point 6
Kenaz Sullivan scored three touchdowns as the host Wolverines won a Commonwealth District clash with the Black-Hawks.
North Stafford (4-2, 1-1) travels to Massaponax next Friday.
Spotsylvania 57, King George 0
Braden Hodges threw for 128 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and Colton Jones and Hudson Callahan both caught a scoring pass and ran for a touchdown in the Knights’ Battlefield District rout of the visiting Foxes.
Braylon Puller added 54 yards and a score on the ground for Spotsylvania (4-1, 2-0), which led 44-0 at halftime.
The Knights travel to Courtland next Friday. King George (0-5, 0-2) will entertain James Monroe the same night.
