Iretha Bumbrey, is an 88-year-old lifelong Fredericksburg resident who has just fulfilled a dream nearly seven decades in the making: she has published her first book of poetry, Praises to His Name.
She began writing poetry at 19, filling notebooks by hand before later typing every poem herself. Her work has always been rooted in faith, gratitude, and encouragement. Over the years, her church family has come to lovingly call her their “Poet Laureate,” a title she earned through decades of sharing her poetry and uplifting messages.
Beyond her writing, my mother has made a profound impact on the Fredericksburg community through her service, including:
- Volunteering at local homeless shelters
- Serving as church secretary for more than 20 years
- Co-founding the Comforting Sisters League, a support group for widows
- Serving on the local Electoral Board
- Being a charter member of Hope House
- Supporting numerous church ministries, community groups, and outreach programs
Her life has been defined by compassion, faith, and a deep commitment to helping others.
This year, she is celebrating a milestone she has waited nearly 70 years to reach: her first official book signing on November 29, 2025. This upcoming event is both time-sensitive and incredibly meaningful — the culmination of a dream she never gave up on.
