UPDATE: As of about 5:20 p.m. Thursday, the Virginia Department of Transportation has announced this work will not occur overnight. The work is now scheduled for Friday, starting at 10 p.m.

EARLIER STORY:

Travelers on U.S. 1 can expect overnight delays Thursday near the Falmouth Bridge to allow crews to remove overhead signs in Fredericksburg.

Starting at 10 p.m., drivers will see alternating single-lane closures on U.S. 1 between the Route 218 (Butler Road)-U.S.17 Business (Warrenton Road) intersection in Stafford County, and the intersection of Hanson Avenue and Princess Anne Street in the city.

Weather permitting, all U.S. 1 traffic will be stopped in 15-minute intervals to allow crews to remove the signs. Emergency vehicles will be permitted through the work zone and across the bridge, which spans the Rappahannock River.

If the work requires an additional night, lane closures will begin at 10 p.m. Friday and end by 6 a.m. Saturday.

The signs are being removed as part of the Route 1, Hanson Avenue, Princess Anne intersection safety project.

This $1.6 million federal Highway Safety Improvement Program work includes:

  • Modifying an existing median on U.S. 1 southbound to provide more space for vehicles turning left just after the bridge onto Princess Anne;
  • Additional pedestrian accommodations for crossing U.S. 1;
  • Replacing a temporary concrete median at Hanson and U.S. 1 with a new, permanent concrete curb and island;
  • Prohibiting left turns from U.S. 1 northbound onto Hanson.
