UPDATED: Since the initial response, investigators with the Caroline County Sheriff’s Office have been working around the clock to advance this investigation. Investigators continue to follow up on leads and are actively coordinating with multiple law enforcement partners as part of a comprehensive investigative effort.

Investigators have made significant progress; however, the identity of the deceased individual has not yet been positively confirmed.

Due to the efforts taken by the person(s) responsible for this crime to conceal the individual’s identity, the identification process in this case is complex and requires careful, methodical work in coordination with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

“This is one of the more disturbing cases our office has encountered. The sick and deliberate efforts taken to conceal the victim’s identity have made this investigation more complex, but our investigators have remained focused and determined. We are making progress, and we will continue to pursue every lead until we identify this individual and bring those responsible to justice.”

Anyone with information that may assist investigators should contact the Caroline County Sheriff’s Office at (804) 633-5400 or if you wish to remain anonymous, contact the Metro Richmond Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000. Original story:

A Caroline County resident called 911 Friday after discovering a body on their land between Bagby Road and Mt. Cloud Road in the Sparta area.

Deputies and investigators responded to the scene and confirmed a deceased adult male. Deputies secured the scene and members of the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division conducted a forensic investigation of the scene. Based on preliminary findings, investigators believe foul play is involved. The incident is being investigated as a homicide.

The identity of the victim has not been confirmed, but investigators are working closely with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and coordinating with surrounding jurisdictions to ensure a positive identification and proper notification of next of kin prior to releasing the man’s identity.

The investigation remains ongoing, but based on information currently available, investigators do not believe this was a random incident. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

“This is a deeply disturbing case,” Caroline Sheriff Scott Moser said. “The scene our deputies and investigators encountered was difficult, but they remained focused and professional from the moment they arrived. We are committed to ensuring that whoever is responsible is brought to justice.”
