When faced with advanced lung care treatment, residents of the Fredericksburg region have often had to travel to Richmond, Northern Virginia, or Washington, D.C. Now, Mary Washington Pulmonology is keeping patients close to home with advanced pulmonology and sleep medicine services. Led by Dr. Vinay Patel, interventional pulmonologist and critical care physician, a new level of diagnostic precision is now available in our region.

“Our goal is to bring advanced, comprehensive pulmonary care close to home so that patients no longer have to travel to major cities to receive specialized lung care,” Dr. Patel says.

Interventional pulmonology is a subspecialty that patients may not hear about until they need it. It encompasses advanced, minimally invasive procedures used to diagnose and treat diseases inside the lungs and airways, including technologies like robotic bronchoscopy and endobronchial ultrasound that were, until recently, largely confined to major academic medical centers.

A specialist built for complex cases

Dr. Patel’s breadth of training spans five board certifications and shapes how he approaches each and every patient.

“Many pulmonary conditions, like a cough or a lung nodule, do not exist in isolation. They often affect the heart, brain, immune system, or the entire body,” Dr. Patel explains. “Because of that, I try to evaluate each patient with a comprehensive view of their health, rather than focusing on a single symptom.”

That approach, he says, typically leads to more thoughtful diagnostics, better coordination between specialists, and clearer guidance for patients navigating complex medical decisions.

What interventional pulmonology means for patients

While general pulmonologists manage chronic conditions like asthma, sleep apnea and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), interventional pulmonology focuses on procedures performed inside the lungs and airways.

At Mary Washington Pulmonology, those capabilities now include:

  • Robotic bronchoscopy, which allows physicians to navigate deep into the lungs to perform a biopsy of small nodules, with a level of precision that was previously impossible without surgery.
  • Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), used to evaluate lymph nodes and diagnose lung cancer at early stages.
  • Airway procedures to treat blockages or narrowing of the breathing passages.
  • Minimally invasive techniques to manage fluid accumulation around the lungs.

“Over the past decade, these technologies have significantly changed how we diagnose lung disease, allowing many patients to avoid more invasive surgical procedures,” Dr. Patel says.

The case for early detection

Lung cancer is among the deadliest cancers because it often develops without symptoms—and by the time those symptoms appear, the disease may be well advanced.

“Early diagnosis is one of the most powerful tools we have in lung disease,” Dr. Patel notes. “With modern technology, we can often find and diagnose problems much earlier than ever before.”

Robotic bronchoscopy is central to that effort. Technology enables physicians to reach small nodules deep in the lungs and obtain biopsies safely and accurately, dramatically shortening the time between detection and diagnosis. Dr. Patel is also working to expand formal lung cancer screening programs in the region—programs designed to identify disease in high-risk individuals before symptoms develop.

Having that capability locally, he notes, really matters to patients. Timely diagnosis can alter treatment options. Distance, travel costs, and the stress of navigating an unfamiliar health system can all delay care. Keeping these services in Fredericksburg removes those barriers.

When to see a pulmonologist

For many patients, the path to a pulmonologist runs through their primary care physician. But there are signs and symptoms you can detect and mention to your provider.

Dr. Patel recommends seeking care for:

  • A persistent cough that does not resolve
  • Unexplained shortness of breath
  • Recurrent pneumonia or respiratory infections
  • Suspected or uncontrolled sleep apnea
  • Asthma or COPD that is difficult to manage

More serious warning signs—coughing up blood, worsening shortness of breath, unexplained weight loss accompanied by respiratory symptoms, or abnormal chest imaging—should prompt a more urgent evaluation.

Lifestyle, environment and lung health

Lifestyle and environment can play a role in the onset of lung disease. Smoking remains the single largest risk factor for conditions like COPD and lung cancer. But Dr. Patel is equally attentive to patients whose lung problems stem from occupational exposures, air quality, and environmental pollutants—factors that may be less visible but no less significant.

“Prevention, early screening, and education are essential in helping reduce the long-term impact of these factors,” he says.

Medicine that feels personal

Ask Dr. Patel about his approach to patient care, and he does not talk about procedures or technology first. He talks about the people.

“Medicine can feel overwhelming for patients and families, especially when they are facing serious diagnoses or complex medical decisions,” he explains. “Treating patients like family means taking the time to explain things clearly, helping them understand their options, and making sure they feel supported through the process. I try to focus not just on the disease but on the person sitting in front of me. Every patient deserves to feel heard, respected, and cared for.”

Fredericksburg is one of the fastest-growing regions in Virginia, and Dr. Patel sees the continued expansion of Mary Washington Pulmonology, as a direct response to that growth.

“What excites me most is the opportunity to help build something meaningful for the community,” Dr. Patel says. “Mary Washington Healthcare is growing, and there is a strong commitment to expanding services that patients need. Being part of developing pulmonary and interventional pulmonology services here is an exciting opportunity to improve access to care and build programs that will serve this region for many years.”
