The board of supervisors voted on March 31 to advertise a real estate tax rate of 58 cents per $100 of assessed value, which represents an increase of six cents. County officials emphasized in a memo that the advertised tax rate can be lowered after the public hearing but not increased. The memo also noted that any increase would first be applied to the June 2026 tax bills since the county adopts its tax rates by calendar year.

The school board will vote on significant revisions and additions to the policy governing public comment during its meetings. Specifically, the new policy warns that any comments “that amount to a personal attack against any school board member and cause unnecessary delay or disruption to a meeting are not allowed.” The board chair would also have the ability to terminate speaking privileges in order to “preserve the civility, decorum and orderly conduct of the meeting.”

The budget for the city’s school division will take center stage during a joint work session of the school board and city council. Later in the evening, the city’s third fire station, to be constructed near the intersection of Fall Hill Avenue and Wicklow Drive, will go before city council for a vote regarding a special-use permit for the project… City council will also consider a change to the appointment process for the arts commission, which should make it easier for organizational representatives to apply.

The county’s board of supervisors agreed to provide the school division with $1.8 million in its fund balance to support school projects. The funds will be used for one-time expenditures, including an upgrade to King George High School’s camera system ($75,000), laptop replacement for the KGHS staff ($120,000), door repair and replacement ($45,000), activity fund reimbursement ($140,000) and several other expenditures.

Maria Lewis, executive director of performance and core curriculum, will present the school division’s proposed 2027-28 instructional calendar. The administration recommends approval of the calendar. Virginia law requires each local school division to develop its own instructional calendar but the school year must have least 180 teaching days or 990 teaching hours. SCPS established a Calendar Committee with a diverse group of community stakeholders, who were charged with providing input on the development of the calendar and reviewing feedback from the community at large. More than 3,000 community members completed the calendar survey.

Fawn Lake Church is requesting an SUP for a place of worship on approximately 12 acres currently zoned Agricultural-3. The property would be built out in phases to include a place of worship, a multi-purpose building, and a parsonage. The church, which would be addressed at 11611 Orange Plank Road (State Route 621) is expected to have 250 members. The location is across from the Fawn Lake subdivision entrance on Harpers Drive. The planning commission voted 7-0 to recommend approval of the project.

On February 28, 2023, the board of supervisors approved a rezoning request for the Spotsy Techno Campus, LLC, project that resulted in a zoning change from Agriculture-2 to Industrial-1. County staff conducted a review to ensure the project’s location, character and extent of the proposed public utilities is in accord with the Comprehensive Plan. Staff analysis concluded that the project is within the scope of the Comprehensive Plan. The planning commission will review the project and make a recommendation, as well.

The board has a fairly light agenda, though it has a work session and a regular meeting. The big-ticket item here is a contract to build the new Drew Middle School. It is slated to go to Rockville, Md.-based HESS Construction Co. LLC for $78 million.
