Letter carriers picked up food donations left by residents at mailboxes along their routes, while volunteers and staff with the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank worked to gather and transport donations from post offices throughout the area. In just a few hours, more than eight tons of food had been collected and moved to the food bank warehouse.
The food will now be sorted and distributed through the food bank’s network of community pantries and partner organizations serving families facing food insecurity across the region. According to the food bank, the donations collected during Saturday’s drive are enough to provide a month’s worth of food for 37 families of four.
In a social media posting, Food bank officials thanked local letter carriers, volunteers and community members who donated food to support neighbors in need. The annual drive remains one of the region’s largest single-day food collection efforts.
