Four young adults from the Richmond area already facing charges in the death of 18-year-old Jayden McComber, are now being charged in the death of a woman whose remains were identified this week.

Authorities identified the victim as Helen Marie Pullen Banks, 56, of Culpeper. A Caroline County resident discovered Banks’ body on Bagby Road in the Sparta area on March 27. Extensive DNA analysis conducted on Tuesday confirmed her identity and  investigators subsequently met with Banks’ family to provide formal notification.

Caroline County Sheriff Scott Moser said in March that because of efforts taken to conceal Banks’ identity by the people responsible for the crime, the case required extensive work by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

As a result of an ongoing investigation, the same four defendants currently being held without bond in connection with the death of McComber, of Hopewell, are now facing first-degree murder charges in connection with Banks’ death. They’re also facing charges of conspiracy to commit murder and use of a firearm in commission of murder.

The defendants are:

  • Rashad Antonio Mayfield, 21, of Glen Allen, currently being held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail
  • Devonti Gregory Pettaway, 19, of Chesterfield, currently being held without bond at the Meherrin River Regional Jail
  • Jaden Lamont Phillips, 20, of Richmond, currently being held without bond at the Pamunkey Regional Jail
  • Kennady Jade Lambert, 18, of Hopewell, Virginia, currently being held without bond at the Pamunkey Regional Jail

Early in the investigation, authorities developed evidence indicating that the homicides of Banks and McComber were connected. Investigators obtained forensic evidence linking the cases through ballistic testing conducted with the assistance of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Investigative findings indicate that Banks and McComber were both familiar with at least one of the suspects. Both homicides are believed to be premeditated, although investigators found no evidence suggesting any conflict or dispute between either victim and the defendants.

“This case reflects the relentless commitment of our investigators to pursue the truth,” Moser said.

“From early in this investigation, our investigators worked diligently to uncover the evidence needed to connect these crimes and bring those responsible to justice. While no announcement can ease the pain of this loss, we hope today’s identification of Helen Marie Pullen Banks provides at least some measure of answers for her loved ones. Our thoughts and prayers remain with her family, as well as with the family of Jayden McComber, during this incredibly difficult time.”

The investigation remains active, but authorities are not seeking additional suspects at this time.
