During the work session prior to the regular meeting, the school board will discuss a General Assembly bill that allows localities to put a referendum on the ballot for voters to support a 1% sales tax that could go toward school construction projects. During the regular meeting, staff will provide an overview of the School Construction Assistance Program Grant that is open for applications with a submission deadline of July 27.

Fredericksburg

City council work session/regular meeting, Tuesday, 5/7:30 p.m.

During its work session, the City Council will discuss entering into a contract with Axon technologies for police cameras and related Artificial Intelligence technologies, then is scheduled to vote on the matter… The body will also vote on proposed amendments to the Unified Development Ordinance intended to make certain residential zoning situations more friendly to developers.

School Board meeting, Monday, 5:30 p.m.

The division is expecting an additional $5 million in funding from the state of Virginia for the fiscal year that began July 1, and is requesting to appropriate the full amount from the Board of Supervisors. Staff propose applying about $3.3 million to items frozen during the adoption of the FY 2027 budget, and plans for the remainder will be discussed at a July 27 work session. The board will also consider approving on second read revisions to Policy GAB (acceptable computer use), Policy GCG (professional staff probationary term and continuing contract status), and Regulation EBB-R.1 (behavioral threat assessment management team procedures).

The consent agenda contains an item switching Battlefield District representative Chris Yakabouski from a primary member of the the Fredericksburg Area Metropolitan Planning Organization board to an alternate in exchange for Berkeley District Supervisor David Goosman. Yakabouski is running for the Commissioner of Revenue seat vacated when longtime Commissioner Deborah Williams died in February. The board will also vote on two projects that were discussed at last month’s meeting — Lafayette Commons and Spotsylvania Meats.

Staff will conduct a work session to discuss the polarizing Crossroads Technology Campus project, which includes a total of 2.2 million square feet of data center buildings, three substations, and others accessory infrastructure on approximately 633 acres. The project would be located on the north side of Mills Drive (State Route 17) with additional frontage along Lee Hill School Drive and Eagle Drive. The properties are west of Benchmark Road, adjacent to the CSX Railroad. The proposal has been met with resistance from county residents, who showed up en masse to a community meeting last month, but left disappointed by the logistics of the meeting and the information that the developers provided.

The agenda for both the work session and meeting concern reconciliation of the school division’s budget for fiscal year 2027, which began July 1. The division is receiving an additional $8.8 million in funding from the state, and the School Board on July 1 proposed reducing the local request from the Board of Supervisors by $1.3 million. However, supervisors voted last week to keep back $2.4 million from the division.
