From the Caroline County Sheriff’s Office:

On May 19, 2019, the Caroline County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a county citizen reporting that a young child arrived at their home, with obvious injuries and alone. CCSO deputies, assisted by VA State Police Troopers, the Caroline Department of Social Services and Caroline County Fire & Rescue personnel responded to the scene, where the 7-year-old child was located. The child was then transported to a local hospital by rescue squad, accompanied by CCSO Investigator M. J. Humphreys. As a result of the initial investigation into this incident, 40 year-old Edward Prince Childs of Woodford and 29 year-old Ashley Karam of Woodford have been arrested and charged with aggravated malicious wounding, child neglect, child abduction, cruelty and abuse of a child and failure to secure medical aid for an injured child. Both suspects are being held at the Pamunkey Regional Jail, without bond. During this investigation, additional children were found to be in the custody of Childs and Karam. These children were immediately placed in protective custody and remain in protective custody with the Caroline County Department of Social Services. The 7-year-old child is at an undisclosed hospital and is considered in critical but stable condition.
