No holding a phone while driving beginning January 1st

From the King George Sheriff’s Office:

The General Assembly has passed an new lawmaking it illegal to hold a handheld personal communication device (ex. cell phone) while driving a motor vehicle in Virginia, effective January 1st 2021.
Here are some, but not all, activities that will be prohibited while driving and holding a mobile device:
– Talk on the phone
– Dial a phone number
– Send text message
– Update/browse social media
– Video conference
– Shop online
– Watch movies/entertainment
– Check the weather
– Play games
A person who violates this law, Va. Code 46.2-818.2, will be subject to a fine of $125 for the first offense, and $250 for second and subsequent offenses. A person who is convicted of reckless driving who is also in violation of this new law can be fined up to $2500, 12 months in jail, and up to a six month license suspension.
