From the City of Fredericksburg:
Crews have been working 24-hours a day since early on Monday to plow and treat roadways. Tree crews are continuing to work on tree removal to get to areas to plow and treat city streets. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we continue to cleanup from this major snow storm. Streets on main and secondary roads are generally clear, with many side streets now being the priority. Most disabled vehicles have been removed from the roadways or are in a position that does not pose a traffic hazard. Interstate 95 opened fully in both directions last night around 8:30pm. We have 5 plow teams working throughout the city currently and have outside contractors working on trees and assisting in snow removal. Our crews have been working on the 100’s of reported downed trees and large limbs. Tree work will continue into at least next week.
Curbside trash and recycling is canceled for the remainder of the week. Next week, excess bagged trash will be accepted alongside the containers. Many of our city department’s phone lines are down, we are working with Cox, our internet provider, who has placed this request on a priority list to get them restored soon. Public Safety phone lines are working. Please leave a message and we will return your calls just as quickly as we can. Email messages are preferred at this time so we can respond more efficiently to you. Please see www.fredericksburgva.gov for email addresses to our various departments.
We are still asking drivers to refrain from non-essential travel, to continue to keep our roadways clear for urgent needs and safety personnel. Our public safety teams have placed barricades in areas where trees or power lines are down. Please do not remove those, they are there to let others know there is an issue on that street or sidewalk. City administrative offices opened today at 10:00am. Our virtual Emergency Operations Center will be maintained 24/7 by staff till the major damage from the storm is cleared. On Monday the City declared a State of Local Emergency which enables potential state monetary
assistance. Damage assessments teams are examining buildings, structures, trees and vehicles.
An emergency warming center opened yesterday at James Monroe High School located at 2300 Washington Avenue. There are currently 13 residents using this space, and it will be open until 8pm tonight (and longer if needed). Residents will need to wear masks, bring their own bedding and food, change of clothing and medications. No pets, alcohol or weapons are allowed. If you need assistance related to other shelter, please contact the Red Cross directly at (855) 891-7325 for assistance.
Dominion Energy is continuing to work to restore power to roughly 1,200 city addresses (down from 4,000 on Monday) still without power. The largest areas that remain without power are some of the Idlewild neighborhood, Westmont, Forest Village, Hillcrest and Mayfield. According to Dominion most of those areas are predicted to have power restored between by midnight this evening. Dominion’s goal is to have the majority of the city restored
by this evening and the majority of the Fredericksburg Regional area, including the surrounding counties, by 11pm tomorrow evening. Please see Dominion Energy outages at https://www.dominionenergy.com/virginia/reportoutage-or-emergency, or call 1-866-DOM-HELP (1-866-366-4357) or use their mobile app. Customers should call 866-DOM-HELP to report downed lines to a customer service agent if
they do not see their neighborhood on the outage map.
Please continue to check on your elderly neighbors! Call 911 if there is a true emergency. We appreciate everyone’s continued patience with employees and outside contractors who have been working around the clock to bring our city back to full function.
