Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories and the classic animated film, Disney’s The Little Mermaid is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages. With music by eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater, and a compelling book by Doug Wright, this fishy fable will capture your heart with its irresistible songs, including “Under the Sea,” “Kiss the Girl,” and “Part of Your World.”

Ariel, King Triton’s youngest daughter, wishes to pursue the human Prince Eric in the world above, bargaining with the evil sea witch, Ursula, to trade her tail for legs. But the bargain is not what it seems, and Ariel needs the help of her colorful friends, Flounder the fish, Scuttle the seagull, and Sebastian the crab to restore order under the sea.

It’s that time of year again to sign up for Friends of the Rappahannock’s Summer Camps! Join us as we engage with the outdoors, learn about river health and ecology, learn river safety, and most importantly, explore and discover the wonders that the river has to offer. We offer camps for rising 1st through 8th graders throughout June and July in two locations: Fredericksburg and Stafford, both offering unique and exciting experiences in the great outdoors. 

In Fredericksburg, camp is hosted at FOR’s headquarters, located right on the Rappahannock River. We are offering six weeks of camp running from June to July. Campers will kayak, paddleboard, and tube on the river while learning about the ecology of our river and its importance in maintaining health through interactive games and activities. We are also love to share that we are again hosting a Girl’s Camp for rising 6th – 8th grade girls who want to build their confidence in the outdoors. This camp will be held June 8th – 11th. The girls will explore the Rappahannock watershed from the mountains to the tidal regions, where they will create lifelong memories and friendships while hiking, kayaking, tubing, paddleboarding, and participating in an optional overnight camping experience under the stars.

At our Stafford Camp location, we offer four weeks of camp in June at Crow’s Nest Research Center right along the beautiful Accokeek Creek. Campers will experience the quiet and pristine wilderness of Crow’s Nest Natural Area Preserve as they hike, fish, kayak, and paddleboard along Accokeek Creek. They will also learn about river safety and how to be good stewards of the land and water as they participate in interactive games and activities in and along the creek.

Presented by Dr. Will Mackintosh, Associate Professor at the University of Mary Washington. Looking backwards, the political decision to break with Great Britain and declare independence looks obvious. Because we all know what happened over the next 250 years, the independence of some of the North American colonies has taken on an air of inevitability. But it wasn’t so obvious to people at the time. This talk explores the politics of Virginia in the mid-1770s to understand who was pushing for independence, why they did so, and how they ultimately won the argument.

Dr. Will Mackintosh is a cultural and social historian of the 19th century United States, with particular interests in the history of leisure, the history of crime, and the cultural history of capitalism. He is the author of Selling the Sights: The Invention of the Tourist in American Culture.

“Arts in the Middle” is an annual Fine Arts Festival in the quaint bayside hamlet of Urbanna, VA oriented for family fun.  Now in its 12^th year, more than 100 juried artists from around the East Coast will feature their work — watercolor, oil and acrylic paintings, sculpture, jewelry, fiber arts, print making, ceramics and more.  This event also includes a variety of musical performances throughout the weekend from jazz to pop; and blues to rock.  Bring the whole family — there will be a children’s tent where kids can try their hands at a natural art creation and a community art project.  Arts in the Middle returns with the popular Wine/Champagne/Beer/Beverage tent, plus food vendors. An Antique Automobile Club of America meet hosted by the Historic Fredericksburg Region.  Over 100 antique vehicles to be judged & many others on display.  Swap meet & car corrral are included.  Visitors are welcome to walk the show fields, see the vehicles up close, talk with the owners, & take photos.   Food trucks & restrooms are on site.  Other activities include a Model T disassembly & assembly, period fashion, show, swing dancers, an award ceremony, & raffle.
