Fredericksburg Releases New Map of City Parks and Trails

Fredericksburg’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Public Facilities and Department of Economic Development and Tourism have collaborated on a new map of the city’s parks and trails.
The new, two-page map highlights 21 outdoor spaces, parks and trails as well as park features including picnic tables, playground equipment, fishing opportunities and more, city staff said.  Page one features downtown locations.  Page two includes Motts Run Reservoir and W. L. Harris and Dixon Parks.

The James Monroe Jackets won their September 12 game 38 – 13 against the Mountain View Wildcats.  It’s was an exciting finish to a game that had a thrilling beginning.  Skydiver Bobby Page delivered the game ball to Maury Stadium.

UMW Dedicates Information and Technology Convergence Center

The University of Mary Washington formally dedicated its Information and Technology Convergence Center with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 18.
The four-story, 77,000 square-foot structure opened to students in August.  The building is located adjacent to Simpson Library and straddling Campus Walk.

New Crosswalk, Traffic Light Pattern at Blue & Gray Parkway, Lafayette

The traffic signals at Lafayette Boulevard and the Blue & Gray Parkway have been modified to accommodate pedestrians, runners and bicyclists using a new crosswalk at the intersection.
The crosswalk was added for the Virginia Central Railway Trail.  Parts 1 and 2 of the trail open Saturday, Sept. 20.   Users of the trail can now activate a crosswalk signal at the Blue & Gray Parkway, just west of Lafayette Boulevard.  When the “Walk” light is on, all traffic across the crosswalk will be stopped.

Fallen Marine Honored with Stafford Procession

Marine Sgt. Charles Strong will be honored with a procession through Stafford County on Tuesday, Sept. 23, when his body is escorted from Dover Air Force Base to Covenant Funeral Service in Stafford.
Sgt. Strong, a member of the Corps’ elite special command, was killed in Herat Province, Afghanistan, on September 15.

Mary Washington Healthcare Names McDermott CEO

Michael McDermott, M.D. has been chosen the next CEO of Mary Washington Healthcare, the  board of trustees announced September 23.  He replaces Fred Rankin, who is retiring.
“Dr. McDermott brings strong knowledge of our organization, and a great passion for the health of our community,” said John F. Fick, III, chairman of the Mary Washington Healthcare Board of Trustees.

City Pledges Additional $2M, Accepts Diamond Nation Offer

Plans for a minor league baseball stadium and amateur sports complex in Fredericksburg were revived Tuesday, when City Council unanimously voted to accept Diamond Nation’s most recent offer.
“We’re essentially back to where we were a year ago,” Mayor Mary Katherine Greenlaw said.
City Manager Bev Cameron announced the offer before the meeting in an email to the press.  He outlined the offer in three points:

Fall Plant Sale Hosted by Rappahannock Adult Activities

Rappahannock Adult Activities (RAAI) is hosting their third annual fall plant sale through October 3 at their 750 Kings Hwy. location in Fredericksburg.  Sale hours are 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.  Pansies, chrysanthemums and a limited selection of herbs are available.
RAAI participants are responsible for the initial planting, placing labels on the pots, daily watering and plant care. They will also be selling the plants and assisting to load the plants in customers’ vehicles.
