Motts Run Reservoir turns 50 this year and the Fredericksburg Parks, Recreation and Events is celebrating with a party at the natural area Saturday.
Established in 1974, the reservoir and recreation area has played a significant role in preserving Fredericksburg’s natural resources while serving as a site for outdoor activities. Motts Run Reservoir was established to ensure reliable water supply for the region. It covers 160 acres within 860 acres of protected landscapes and waterways. Over the past five decades, this area has provided habitat for wildlife, opportunities for fishing, and a place for individuals seeking outdoor experiences.
On Sept. 28 from noon to 5 p.m., the public is invited to the reservoir for an opening ceremony, live music by Tommy Filkoski and Larry, Harry, & Buck, food trucks, boating and more.
“Motts has gone from being one of Fredericksburg’s lesser-known parks to being a popular destination over the past 50 years. With a variety of activities available (hiking, biking, learning, boating, fishing, picnicking, and more), visitors can explore and create experiences regularly. It will be interesting to see what this park will mean to the community after another 50 years,” said Callie Brown, superintendent of recreation of Fredericksburg Parks, Recreation & Events.
“Motts is a testament to the enduring beauty of nature and the community that supports it.”
Motts Run Reservoir is located at 6600 River Road.
