A vibrant celebration uniting tribal citizens, the local community, and environmental partners to tackle the challenge of invasive fish in the Chesapeake Bay and Rappahannock River.

This collaborative event, hosted by the Patawomeck Tribe of Virginia, the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science’s Integration and Application Network (UMCES-IAN), the Environmental Justice Journalism Initiative (EJJI), and the Friends of the Rappahannock will feature:

  • Delicious Food: Sample creative dishes made from invasive catfish and other local fare from restaurants and food trucks, plus a signature cocktail.
  • Live Music & Entertainment: Enjoy performances from tribal bands and local musicians.
  • Interactive Activities: Experience water testing, nature walks, and tours of the Tribal Center, museum, and longhouses.
  • Educational Engagement: Learn about the ecological impact of invasive species, sustainable fisheries, and the cultural significance of the Rappahannock River watershed through partner exhibits and expert talks
  • Community Partnerships: Connect with regional partners like the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Chesapeake Bay Trust, Friends of the Rappahannock, and neighboring tribes.

The festival aims to raise awareness about the threat of invasive catfish, promote their use as a delicious and affordable protein, and foster stewardship of the river and Bay.
