Germanna Community College President David A. Sam’s poem “Taconic Orogeny” has been nominated for inclusion in The Pushcart Prize: Best of the Small Presses. The renown literary anthology was named among the most influential projects in the history of American publishing by Publishers Weekly.

Sam’s poem “Taconic Orogeny” was first published in the fall of 2015 in Vine Leaves Literary Journal, an online quarterly and annual print publication. The announcement of all those selected for the 2017 edition will be made in May 2016, according to Mike Zitz, Germanna Community College director of media and community relations.

A grandchild of immigrants and a first-generation college student, Sam has written two books of poems. His semi-autobiographical “Memories in Clay, Dreams of Wolves,” was published in 2014 and “Dark Land, White Light” was published in 1971. He’s also been published in Carbon Culture Review, The Crucible, The Flagler Review, The Write Place at the Write Time, The Summerset Review, The Birds We Pile Loosely, and Literature Today.

Profits from sales of “Memories in Clay, Dreams of Wolves” go to the Germanna Community College Educational Foundation.

Sam spent his early childhood in McKeesport, Pa., a coal and steel suburb of Pittsburgh. Later, his family relocated with his father’s factory to Belleville, Mich., a Detroit exurb. Much of his childhood was passed exploring railroad tracks, woods, lakes, and rural farm fields. These are the source of much imagery in his poetry, he said.

Sam is a graduate of Eastern Michigan University (EMU) and Michigan State University. He has taught creative writing, English literature, and composition at EMU, Marygrove College, Oakland Community College, and Pensacola State College. He became the fifth president of Germanna Community College in March 2007.

Sam lives in Culpeper with his wife, Linda.
