Germanna Community College President Dr. David Sam announced August 16 that he will retire on June 30, 2017. Sam has led Germanna since 2007.
During Sam’s tenure as president, Germanna’s total enrollment (credit and workforce) increased 61 percent to more than 12,000 students, according to the college. In addition, the college has expanded its Fredericksburg Campus in Spotsylvania, christened the Daniel Technology Center in Culpeper, added centers in Stafford and Caroline counties, and has begun plans for the Fredericksburg Center for Advanced Technology (Fred CAT).
“David’s leadership has allowed the college to expand facilities, and also put in play master plans for long term growth of the college that’s so critically needed,” said Doug Elliott, Germanna’s Vice President for Institutional Advancement and the Executive Director of the GCC Educational Foundation.
“The number of awards –total degrees and certificates — earned by Germanna students has increased by 183 percent during his presidency,” said Michael Zitz, Germanna’s Director of Media & Community Relations.
During his final year as president, Sam plans to focus on replacing the1969 Locust Grove Campus building, which houses the nursing program, with a new building that will house a “cutting-edge medical training facility.”
Sam and his wife Linda have two children, Michelle and Ryan, and three grandchildren.
Germanna is beginning a national search for Sam’s replacement. School officials hope to make a selection by March 2017.
