The Stafford County Board of Supervisors has named Bill Ashton as the new county administrator.

Ashton, who has been serving as town manager of Herndon since 2017, will assume his new role on Sept. 16, succeeding Interim County Administrator Craig Meadows.

“The selection of a county administrator is vital for the board to ensure the continued delivery of effective government services and the board’s priorities of keeping Stafford a safe community with a strong educational system while balancing our growing needs,” Board of Supervisors Chair Meg Bohmke said in a news release. “Bill’s extensive educational background, professional experience, and remarkable accomplishments perfectly align with our community’s vision. The board is eager to collaborate with Bill on pivotal county and community initiatives to enhance our overall operations and service delivery.”

In his role as county administrator, Ashton will manage all county departments and oversee the county government’s daily operations, implementing the policies and directives set by the board.

“I am honored to serve as the next county administrator for Stafford County,” Ashton said. “My unwavering commitment to public service and a keen desire to make Stafford County an exceptional place to live and work drives my passion for this new role. I am excited to collaborate with the board of supervisors and the committed staff to fulfill the county’s vision and meet the needs of our community.”

Ashton’s previous experience includes his role as director of information technology for the Town of Herndon, starting in 1997. Ashton holds a master’s degree in public administration from George Mason University and a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He is a member of the International City/County Management Association and Virginia Local Government Managers Association.
