Acorns, black walnuts, and chestnuts are now dropping across the state, but in urban and suburban areas, most will never grow into trees.
That’s why the Virginia Department of Forestry is calling on residents to collect and donate native nuts by October 15. These seeds are critical for restoring and sustaining healthy forests, and your contribution helps the Forestry Department grow genetically diverse, regionally adapted trees in its state nurseries.
Species urgently needed this year include black oak, white oak, chestnut oak, and black walnut. To participate, gather nuts in paper bags, clearly label them, and drop them off at your nearest Forestry office — details and collection guidelines are available at DOF.Virginia.gov
