“Eliza, we have done our best to restore your reputation and repatriate your remains to your home, the United States of America,” said historian and biographer Barbara VornDick during an emotional ceremony Thursday at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond.

The remains of Eliza Monroe Hay, the firstborn daughter of President James Monroe, were laid to rest beside her family after nearly two centuries in an unmarked grave in Paris.

The reinterment ceremony also featured remarks from State Senator Bryce Reeves and others who helped bring Hay’s remains home.
