A Zambia-based ministry claimed the $1 million Opus Prize on Thursday night at Xavier University of Louisiana, while Fredericksburg’s Micah Ecumenical Ministries—one of three global finalists—received $100,000 in recognition of its work.

In announcing the finalists, organizers said they were selected for “championing faith-filled change” and tackling some of the world’s most persistent social challenges. The Opus Prize is among the world’s largest faith-based humanitarian awards for social innovation.

Before the winner was named, Micah Executive Director Megann Cotter spoke about the ministry’s mission and the tangible impact its programs have had on vulnerable neighbors across the Fredericksburg region.
