The Caroline Historical Society is seeking any former students who attended county schools in 1969-70 when integration became law.
Caroline School Board member Calvin Taylor, Historical Society President Kathy McVay, and community member Pitman Rock are organizing a community conversation to take place on May 3 at 3 p.m. at the Caroline Community Services Center to recognize that moment in the county’s history and discuss progress and setbacks since that time. The Historical Society will also put up display telling the story of full integration in the county.
The school division first integrated in 1965 when a group of students from Union High School, the Black school in the county during segregation, voluntarily transferred to Caroline High. But in 1969, part of Union and all of Caroline High united and became Bowling Green Senior High School. Another portion of Union and C.T. Smith High united to become Ladysmith High.
Taylor is asking that anyone wishing to participate in the discussion contact him at cwtaylor4@netscape.net or McVay at kmcvay1257@gmail.com.
