UMW’s Robinson announces plans to enter transfer portal

INDIANAPOLIS—The brims had hardly been creased on the gray national championship hats distributed to University of Mary Washington men’s basketball team when head coach Marcus Kahn was asked about the chances of keeping his roster intact.

“I think they’ll be back until I hear different,” Kahn said following the Eagles’ 75-73 victory over Emory in the Division III final. “The expectation is that we’ll return everyone but Jadon [Burgess] because he graduates early. But, you never know, so it’s great that we took full advantage of this opportunity.”

Less than a day later, that expectation came undone in a significant way as sophomore guard Kye Robinson entered the transfer portal.

Robinson, the Coast 2 Coast Player of the Year and Final Four Most Outstanding Player announced his intentions in an Instagram post on Monday afternoon.

“Thank you UMW for everything you guys have done and given me these past 2 years,” Robinson wrote. “I’ve loved every second of it, to my coaches and teammates thank you for always supporting me. With that said, I’m officially entering the transfer portal to see what the future holds!”

As a freshman, Robinson earned C2C rookie of the year honors after leading UMW with 13.5 points per game.

This season, the 6-foot-2 Robinson led the Eagles (30-3) in scoring with 24.3 points per game, assists (130) and rebounds (227). He led all scorers with 27 points in Sunday’s national championship game and set into motion the frantic sequence that led to Colin Mitchell’s buzzer-beating layup.

“Kye Robinson is one of the best players in the country, if not the best,” Mitchell said.

March was truly madness for UMW’s Robinson, family
