The Woman’s Club of Fredericksburg recently presented Anita Crossfield the 2026 President’s Award for Woman of the Year during a ceremony at Ristorante Renato.
The President’s Award for Woman of the Year was established during the 1990-92 term of Club President Frances L. Armstrong and presented to a person who, through her leadership and service, enhanced and preserved the quality of life in the greater Fredericksburg community. A candidate must be recommended by a club member, endorsed by two letters of recommendation, and approved by the board of directors.
Crossfield was introduced by club member Bev Rawlings.
“Today, we are honored to present the 2026 President’s Award for Woman of the Year to a woman who exemplifies the requirements of this endorsement,” Rawlings said. “Her unassuming, constant, and dedicated service to our community makes Anita Crossfield eminently qualified to receive this award.”
Rawlings recounted her conversation with Crossfield over a meal at Foode. “Our conversation about her life left a lasting impression.”
Crossfield, a native Albanian living in war-torn Kosovo, escaped to America in 2004 with her daughter, Kristiana.
“The words inspiring and inspirational and heroic kept coming to me,” Rawlings said. “Anita came to America with dreams, determination, and hope for a better future.”
Crossfield pursued education at Germanna Community College, where she studied English as a Second Language and literature. She became partner in a downtown cafe and later took ownership of the business herself. Anita’s Cafe and Dessert Bar on Caroline Street has become “a welcoming hub in the Fredericksburg community,” said Rawlings.
Crossfield serves on the city’s Economic Development Authority, is a member of the Rappahannock Rotary Club, sits on the board of the Fredericksburg Area Museum and supports numerous local organizations through fundraising and outreach.
“I am truly honored to receive this recognition,” Crossfield said. “This is a room filled with history, impact, and women who have helped shape the path for generations. Your motto, ‘Not for Ourselves Alone’, speaks deeply to me. It reflects the way I try to live my life every day. I am a proud immigrant woman. I am a dedicated United States citizen. And I am the luckiest Fredericksburg resident.”
