City shooting leads to school lockdowns

UPDATE 4:05 p.m.: All schools are off indoor instruction and dismissal will begin. “Expect delays as we safely get everyone home,” an FCPS spokesperson stated.

UPDATE 3:53 p.m.: According to a note from FCPS, Gladys West and Lafayette will soon come out of lockdown. All Dunning Mills students will remain at the school.

Gladys West and Lafayette Elementary schools in the city of Fredericksburg are on lockdown as police investigate a shooting in a nearby neighborhood.

In a message to families around 3:25 p.m. on Thursday, FCPS wrote that police are investigating a shooting in the 1100 block of Dunning Mills Road.

FCPS initially held dismissal at all schools, before later releasing students at James Monroe High School, Gladys West Middle School and preschool programs.

Lafayette and Gladys remain on lockdown, while Hugh Mercer Elementary School is on indoor instruction.
