State Sen. Tara Durant announces her intention to run for Congress

State Sen. Tara Durant wants to trade Richmond for Washington.

Durant, a Republican from Stafford County, on Wednesday announced her intention to run for Congress.

If she were to get the GOP nomination, that would likely set up a contest next year versus Democratic Rep. Eugene Vindman in Virginia’s 7th District, which includes the Fredericksburg area.

Vindman, who lives in Dale City, won the seat in November in a close — and closely watched — race against Republican Derrick Anderson, who grew up in Spotsylvania County.

Durant was elected to the state Senate in 2023 after serving one term in the House of Delegates. The 52-year-old represents the 27th District, which comprises Fredericksburg and parts of Spotsylvania and Stafford.

In an email announcement of her congressional campaign, Durant said she wants to “defeat Eugene Vindman and the radical left.”

“I’m not a career politician,” she said. “I’m a Marine wife, a mother of three, a breast cancer survivor — and a conservative fighter. I’ve stood with Governor Glenn Youngkin to cut taxes, protect families and grow the economy. Now, I’m ready to take that fight to Washington — alongside President Trump — and deliver real, America-First leadership.”

Durant said that the nation’s borders are “wide open,” police are being defunded and the “Biden-Vindman agenda” is failing families.

In Congress, she said she would fight to:

  • Build the border wall and stop what she called “taxpayer-funded benefits for illegal immigrants;”
  • Fully fund law enforcement;
  • Keep boys out of girls’ sports;
  • Cut taxes, rein in spending and grow the economy;
  • Protect constitutional freedoms, including the Second Amendment.

Durant could not be reached Wednesday for further comment.
