A crowd gathered Thursday at Richmond’s Hollywood Cemetery for the reinterment of Eliza Monroe Hay, the daughter of President James Monroe. The ceremony marked the end of a yearslong effort to return her remains from an unmarked grave in Paris to the Monroe family plot.
Historian Barbara VornDick, who led the project, and State Senator Bryce Reeves were among the speakers.
Hay’s reburial restores her place beside her family nearly two centuries after her death.
