Spotsylvania Sheriff Roger Harris announced Tuesday that he will retire when his term expires in 2028.
Harris has worked in law enforcement for 56 years, with the past 13 years spent overseeing the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office. Harris was re-elected in 2024, defeating challenger Steven Maxwell.
“It has been one of the greatest honors of my life to serve the citizens of Spotsylvania County and to work alongside the dedicated men and women of this office,” Harris stated in a Facebook post.
Harris went on to endorse Lt. Col. Delbert Myrick as the county’s next sheriff. Former sheriff’s office Maj. Troy Skebo, whose 26-year tenure with the county ended last year, is also running for sheriff in 2028.
Harris said Myrick’s “leadership, integrity and unwavering commitment to public service make him the right choice to continue moving this office forward.”
“I have full confidence in his ability to lead this agency with professionalism, vision, and dedication,” Harris stated.
