Former Fredericksburg Commonwealth’s Attorney La Bravia Jenkins died this past weekend. Jenkins served as the city’s elected commonwealth’s attorney from 2008-21. Prior to her election as Fredericksburg’s chief prosecutor, she served as assistant commonwealth’s attorney and as a supervising prosecutor.
The Fredericksburg Commonwealth’s Attorney Office, now led by Libby Humphries, released a statement Monday lauding Jenkins for leading the office with “tremendous skill and professionalism.”
Jenkins also served in leadership roles in the Virginia Association of Commonwealth’s Attorneys (VACA). In 2017, VACA honored Jenkins’ with the Robert F. Horan Award, which is the organization’s honor for distinguished service by an elected prosecutor. She was inducted into the Virginia Lawyers Hall of Fame in 2019.
The statement from Humphries’ office also noted that Jenkins was instrumental in the community initiative that established the Safe Harbor Child Advocacy Center, which serves child abuse victims in Fredericksburg as well as Caroline, Essex, King George, Orange, Spotsylvania, and Stafford counties.
“On behalf of the Fredericksburg law enforcement community, Fredericksburg Police Chief Betsy Mason and Fredericksburg Sheriff Rashawn Cowles join me in expressing our deepest sympathies to Ms. Jenkins’ family, friends, and colleagues,” the statement from the Commonwealth’s Attorney Office read.
