You remember middle school. Those awkward years when you were changing in more ways than one. You didn’t really know who you were or who you wanted to be. Unfortunately, not much has changed. Our kids still go through this phase and with so much access to the world through social media, these years are even more complicated.
The Fredericksburg Clean and Green Commission is sponsoring its “Butts Are Litter, Too” campaign August 24 – 30, 2014. The commission wants residents and visitors to to be aware of the litter caused by cigarette butts.

The James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library (JMM) and Washington Heritage Museums (WHM) present a day of pirates on Saturday, Aug. 23.
“Piracy was a scourge of American commerce for nearly 300 years, and James Monroe did his part to combat it,” said James Monroe Museum staff. “The practice also contributed to the folklore of the east coast and the Caribbean.”
James Monroe Museum and Library (JMM), located at 908 Charles St. in Historic downtown Fredericksburg, presents the following special events August through December 2014.
Saturday, August 23: “‘Every Species of Lawless Adventure’: James Monroe and the Fight against Piracy.”

Diamond Nation has requested a permanent real estate tax exemption from the City of Fredericksburg in exchange for a revenue share “in perpetuity” and the city’s investment of up to $26 million to build a baseball stadium and sports complex in Celebrate Virginia South.
The new terms came in a letter to City Council on August 21 from Diamond Nation owner Jack Cust.

Fredericksburg officials have been negotiating on a baseball stadium for over a year. The final negotiations last year resulted in a package that totaled $28 million dollars in cash, tax breaks and incentives to the Baseball Group (which is comprised of the former Hagerstown Suns and Diamond Nation) from the City.
The following Fredericksburg City Public Schools (FCPS) job openings are current as of August 25, 2014, according to the Fredericksburg Public Schools jobs website.

Dixon Park Pool is counting down the last days of summer with Labor Day Weekend swim hours and two special events the first week of September.
The pool is open 11:30 a.m. – 7 p.m. through Monday, Sept. 1, 2014, for swimming. A photo ID is required for entrance. City residents have free admission. Guests and nonresidents pay a fee: adults 18 – 54 pay $7; children 2 and younger are free; all others pay $5.
