Fourth of July Safety for Your Dog

If your dog is nervous about thunderstorms, the Fourth of July can be downright terrifying.
The first business day after July 4 is one of the busiest days of the year at pet shelters, according to the Humane Society of the United States, as many dogs run away in fear from the loud noises of fireworks displays.

Mirinda Reynolds’ second downtown Fredericksburg mural will be anchored with a date, like her first one.
“The Battle of Fredericksburg in 1862 was a pivotal moment in the Civil War,” Reynolds said. “More than 17,000 soldiers died right here, from the river up to Marye’s Heights. This mural is a way to honor them.”
The TARDIS Has Marterialized at Salem Church Library
The TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimension in Space), the time travel machine utilized by Dr. Who on the geekily popular BBC television series, has materialized adjacent to the checkout desk at Salem Church Library.
The replica has been making its way ’round the branches of Central Rappahannock Regional Library, and will be at the Salem Church branch, 2607 Salem Church Rd., until October 12.
The Community Give Fredericksburg

Area nonprofits have until April 14, 2014, to register for the first ever day of community giving in Fredericksburg.
The Community Give is a 24-hour day of online giving scheduled from 12 a.m. until 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6.

Celebration Planned to Honor Rob Grogan’s Life
Rob Grogan’s wife Virginia and daughter Lexi announced a celebration of Rob’s life to be held Sunday, March 16, at 4 p.m.
Grogan, editor of Front Porch Fredericksburg magazine, had been battling the rare carcinoid cancer. He died Sunday, Feb. 23, at age 61.

One Day Opportunity: Civil War Kids Camp

Spotsylvania County is now accepting registrations for its unique Civil War Kids Camp. The hands-on camp for children ages 7 – 14 will take place from 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Friday, April 25, at the historic Dabney House. The age determination date is Jan. 1, 2014.
Campers will visit various stations throughout the day to learn what life would have been like during the Civil War. Stations will include life in the military, home life for families, the Underground Railroad, women’s roles in the war and more.

A “Celebration of Life” in honor of Rob Grogan will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 16, at the Inn at the Old Silk Mill, 1707 Princess Anne St.

Register for the Spring Rappahannock River Clean-Up

Join the Friends of the Rappahannock for their 2014 Spring River Clean-Up from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 26.
The annual family event begins in Old Mill Park, 2410 Caroline St, Fredericksburg. From there, volunteers disperse to clean trash from the Rappahannock River and nearby lands and streams. The Friends of the Rappahannock provides supplies, site map and lunch.
Fredericksburg Area Schools Announce Delays for March 18

Fredericksburg City and Spotsylvania and Stafford County Public Schools will all open two hours late on Tuesday, March 18, due to the snow.
There will be no morning preschool classes in Stafford County.
Fredericksburg 12-month staff are on code green. Spotsylvania County 12-month staff should report to work on time.

Night Paving April 15 – 24 in Downtown Fredericksburg
Columbia Gas has scheduled paving work in downtown Fredericksburg beginning Tuesday, April 15, through Thursday, April 24, 2014.
All streets will remain open during paving operations. However, temporary lane closures will be in effect while work is in progress. No work will be conducted on Friday and Saturday, April 18 and 19.
Work on Princess Anne Street (blocks 100 – 800) and on Amelia Street (block 200) will be conducted from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. beginning April 15 and concluding April 22, if all goes as planned
