Veterans Day Observances 2015

Veterans Day is an official United States federal holiday observed annually on November 11 to honor people who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Observances in the Fredericksburg region on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2015, include the following:

There is no Virginia Railway Express (VRE) service on November 11, due to the Federal holiday.

The Fredericksburg Area Veterans Council is hosting its annual Veterans Day ceremony beginning at 10:45 a.m. at Fredericksburg’s Memorial to Our Fallen Heroes, located at the junction of George, Barton and Liberty Streets.

American Legion Post 320 invites the public to a wreath-laying ceremony at 11 a.m. at the monuments in front of the Spotsylvania Historic Courthouse, which is located across Business 208 from the Holbert Building, 9104 Courthouse Rd.

Central Rappahannock Regional Library is hosting a fines-free day on Veterans Day. Return all overdue materials and all fines will be waived.

All 36 Virginia State Parks are offering free admission on Veterans Day. In addition, parks are hosting special events, including:

Lake Anna State Park is hosting an Open House from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Visitors Center, 6800 Lawyers Rd., Spotsylvania, Va. Hot chocolate and pastry will be served. Bring a photo or share a story of your beloved service men and women.

The Veteran’s Day Wall of Honor at Leesylvania State Park, 2001 Daniel K. Ludwig Dr., Woodbridge, is a display of photos and stories submitted by local residents in honor of family and friends who have served in the military. Visit between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Veterans Day. Parking is free.

Veteran’s Day 5K Run/Walk For Wounded Warriors at Sky Meadow State Park, 11012 Edmonds Ln., Delaplane, Va., is a 5K Trail Run in recognition of Veteran’s Day. All funds raised will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. On site registration is $30.

Veteran’s Day Card Making will be held at Westmoreland State Park, 1650 State Park Rd., Montross, Va. Come by the Visitor Center from 1 to 3 p.m. to make a handmade card that will be sent to Veterans.

Caledon State Park hosts Veteran’s Day – The War of 1812 and the Battle of the White House from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14. You’ll discover how Caledon got its name when you meet Gustavus Brown Alexander, as portrayed by a park interpreter in period clothing. Meet at the Visitors Center, 11617 Caledon Rd., King George, Va.

The Gordonsville Annual Veteran’s Parade begins at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015. “Our hope is to have as many veterans as possible marching and riding, along with their supporters honoring them with patriotic music, floats in the parade,” organizers said. Gordonsville is in Orange County, Va.
