Katie L. King has been promoted to manager of Rising Sun Tavern, the historic site in downtown Fredericksburg. King joined the guide staff earlier this year.
King’s promotion follows the retirement of Jo Atkins, who worked with Rising Sun Tavern for 22 years, the last 10 as manager.
“Katie is most excited to meet guests, host events and exhibits, and expand the Rising Sun Tavern’s role as an event venue,” said Anne Darron, executive director of Washington Heritage Museums, which owns and manages the historic property.
King, who said she has a passion for history, participates in 18th and 19th century reenactments. She and her husband, Sgt. Gregory King, USMC, are stationed in Prince William County.
Rising Sun Tavern, 1304 Caroline St, was built in 1760 by George Washington’s youngest brother Charles. The private home became a tavern in 1792, operating for 35 years as a stopover for travelers in the bustling port town of Fredericksburg.
Rising Sun Tavern is one of four historic house museums owned and managed by Washington Heritage Museums. The others are:
Mary Washington House, 1200 Charles St.
St. James’ House, 1300 Charles St.
Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop, 1020 Caroline St.
