Dr. Christopher Newman has officially begun his tenure as the new President and CEO of Mary Washington Healthcare (MWHC), the nonprofit announced Monday.

Newman (MD, MBA) served as MWHC’s chief operating officer and chief medical officer since 2019. He succeeds longtime CEO Mike McDermott, who announced in December that he would leave MWHC to take the same position at a nonprofit hospital in Monterey, California.

In a press release, MWHC stated that Newman’s leadership and vision have helped drive improvements in patient care, operations, and strategic initiatives.

Before joining MWHC, Newman served as chief medical officer for Penn State Health St. Joseph Regional Health Network and led operations for Penn State Health’s Medical Group. He earned his medical degree from Georgetown University and completed his residency in internal medicine at Georgetown University Medical Center. Additionally, Newman holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Virginia Darden School of Business.

As President and CEO, Newman stated that he is committed to building upon MWHC’s strong foundation, continuing its growth as a thriving, non-profit healthcare system. Under his leadership, MWHC plans to expand its academic facilities, enhance technology, and provide the community with “exceptional” care close to home, according to the release.

“I am truly honored to have been chosen as CEO, and I remain dedicated to advancing our mission of enhancing the health of individuals in our communities,” Newman said in the press release. “I look forward to building on the progress we’ve made and furthering our goal of making Mary Washington Healthcare the leading health system for our providers, team members, patients, and the entire community.”

MWHC also posted a video accompanying the announcement in which Newman shares his “vision for the future of Mary Washington Healthcare and his message to the community.”
