Biz Beat Roundup: Hospital re-development approved in Fredericksburg

  • Fredericksburg City Council last week unanimously approved a special-use permit that will allow the 280,000-square-foot former Mary Washington Hospital at 2300 Fall Hill Ave. to be renovated into 242 apartment units along with some small commercial spaces for a daycare center and coffee shop. Richmond-based Rebkee is developing the project, which will use historic tax credits as part of the financing. A vacant lot adjacent to the project on Fall Hill Avenue will become a park open to the public.
  • There were 90 homes sold in the past week in the Fredericksburg area, according to the weekly sales list from the Fredericksburg Area Association of Realtors. Check back weekly for the new list.
  • Chunky Cup will open a store at the former Sweet Frog location at 1211 Emancipation Highway in Fredericksburg’s Eagle Village shopping center. The business’ offerings will include bubble tea and ice cream. The business also has locations in Woodbridge and North Stafford.
  • Rocky Mountain Resuscitation LLC, a Spotsylvania-based business that offers emergency-medical training to first responders, is the subject of this week’s Biz Beat Clips video.
  • Longtime area serial entrepreneur Tom Callahan, whose latest venture is Callahan Learning Center, is the guest on this week’s edition of the Biz Beat Banter podcast.
  • Leadership at the University of Mary Washington (UMW) and Mary Washington Healthcare last week briefed Fredericksburg City Council on a potential new medical school (tentatively named the Mary Washington College of Medicine).
  • Fredericksburg-based DND Jewelers this year is celebrating 25 years in business.
  • Embrey Mill Town Center in Stafford

    Numerous additional businesses are expected to open in Stafford’s Embrey Mill Town Center in the next few months. These include Ledo Pizza, Turning Point, Primrose School, Dolee Nails & Spa, Shah’s Halal Food, Mezeh Mediterranean Grill, Ku-Tea Coffee & Tea Town, and El Jimador Mexican Restaurant. A Popeyes location is also under construction at the center off Courthouse Road near Interstate 95.

  • Mary Washington Hospital’s Postgraduate Year One Pharmacy Residency program has been granted full accreditation by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. The 52-week training program is designed to strengthen residents’ clinical, communication and management skills in preparation for a pharmacy-related career.
  • An arcade called Cosmic Clawcade is planned at the Spotsylvania Towne Centre. The business is planning to open soon.
  • Local homebuilder Tricord Inc. is working on a Spotsylvania project called Cason’s Mill that is designed to help address affordable-housing issues in the Fredericksburg region.
  • UMW Associate Provost for Career and Workforce Kimberly Young received this year’s Patricia Lacey Metzger Award for distinguished achievement from UMW’s Women’s Leadership Colloquium. The Metzger Award – named for the late Mary Washington professor who helped establish the Colloquium in 1994 – honors individuals who demonstrate integrity and professional excellence and are making a lasting impact on their communities.
