A Stafford man is in custody and charged with murder after a Caroline County man was shot and killed Tuesday, the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday

Michael Dodge II, 35, of Caroline was at a property in the 600 block of Mountain View Road to perform work for a mortgage company, authorities said.

Deputies responded to the scene after a caller said a co-worker was at the location for work. The caller heard shots being fired over a phone call with the co-worker and then could no longer get in contact with their colleague.

When deputies arrived, they found a man lying in a driveway unresponsive. Then they noticed movement inside of a home and began communicating with a man there.

After a brief standoff, deputies detained Donald Thomas, 64, without incident. He was staying at the home, the sheriff’s office said.

Dodge was pronounced deceased at the scene. An investigation revealed that he had been shot multiple times.

Thomas was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and unlawfully shooting or wounding in the commission of a felony. He is being held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.
