A week after holding a somewhat-sparsely attended public hearing, City council will hold its first votes on the FY2027 budget, real estate tax rate (84 cents per $100 of assessed value), water and sewer rates and medical service transport fees. They’ll also weigh in on a list of streets to be included in the asphalt rehabilitation program, which proposes to improve or reconstruct seven streets: Progress Street, Charlotte Street, Willis Street, Van Buren Street, Myrick Street, Hanover Street and Washington Avenue (Southbound) at a cost of $1.5 million.

The county’s consent agenda lists a $5 million real estate purchase agreement with New Post Sports Complex for three parcels, consisting of 118.9 acres, 86.2 acres, and 29.1 acres. The county is seeking to buy the sports complex and place it under its parks and recreation department. The complex includes seven soccer fields, irrigation infrastructure and a restroom/concessions building. The budget impact for FY27 includes $89,000 in operational costs and $41,000 for part-time employees.

The board will discuss the decisions that Superintendent Clint Mitchell and his staff recommended regarding the Fiscal Year 2027 budget. Mitchell and his staff recommended cutting back the number of additional Career and Technical Education teachers for next year from five to two, among other cuts from the budget originally approved by the school board before it learned of the board of supervisors’ final budget. The school board is also expecting to have a clearer picture of state funding before adopting the final budget at this meeting.
