King George Parks & Recreation has been awarded $500 from Keep Virginia Beautiful as part of the statewide nonprofit’s Green Grants program.

Every spring, government, nonprofit, civic, and service organizations across Virginia are invited to apply for grants ranging from $500 to $1,000 to support projects that align with Keep Virginia Beautiful’s mission. Groups can submit project proposals under the following categories: litter prevention, recycling and waste reduction, cigarette litter prevention and recycling, community beautification, and, new for 2026, environmental education.

“With Green Grants, we can support a variety of creative projects that meet the unique needs and priorities of communities. We continue to be inspired by the collective impact of Green Grants and how it brings people together in common purpose to make their community cleaner, greener, and more vibrant,” said Cristi Lawton, executive director of Keep Virginia Beautiful.

King George Parks & Recreation cares for over 400 acres of parkland in addition to overseeing a variety of recreational programs and special events. Volunteers from the local Master Gardener Association, garden clubs, and the Little League also support the efforts of King George Parks & Recreation.

The department will use the $500 to install permanent litter pick-up stations in King George’s most popular parks. Each station will feature a weatherproof dispenser of trash bags, a litter picker kiosk, and educational signage encouraging the “Leave It Better Than You Found It” philosophy.

The mission of Keep Virginia Beautiful is to engage and unite Virginians to improve natural and scenic environment through litter prevention, recycling/waste reduction, and community beautification. Since 2011, Keep Virginia Beautiful has awarded over $360,000 in funding to support environmental improvement projects across the Commonwealth. Funding for Green Grants was made possible through sponsors Altria, PepsiCo, GFL Environmental, and TowneBank.
