The public is invited to learn more about, and comment on, a proposed project on Route 1 that would build bicycle and pedestrian facilities in Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County, the Virginia Department of Transportation announced Monday.
The plan is to build bicycle and pedestrian access along Route 1 from Harrison Road in Spotsylvania to Idlewild Boulevard in Fredericksburg. Facilities include a shared-use path, sidewalk, share the road signs and pavement markings.
As part of the project, a pedestrian bridge over Hazel Run will be built parallel to Route 1 and pedestrian-crossing signal equipment will be installed at Kings Mill Drive and Idlewild Boulevard.
An in-person design public hearing on the work will be held May 5, from 5-7 p.m. at Lafayette Elementary School, 3 Learning Lane, Fredericksburg, VA 22401.
Residents can stop by at any time at the public hearing to review displays and proposed plans, and to discuss questions with VDOT staff.
The public also can view meeting materials on the project page and submit comments using an online survey.
Comments on the project will be accepted at the public hearing and afterward through May 16.
Comments also may be emailed to fred.comments@vdot.virginia.gov. Please reference “Route 1 Bicycle and Pedestrian Improvements” in the email subject line. Those interested can mail thoughts in, as well. Address those to Byrd Holloway, VDOT Senior Project Manager, 87 Deacon Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22405.
