The Fredericksburg Area Veterans Council is hosting a Memorial Day ceremony from 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. on Monday, May 26, 2014.
This year’s theme is “Honoring the Fallen Through Our Actions.”

Qualifying families in the City of Fredericksburg and the counties of Spotsylvania, Stafford, Caroline and King George may obtain free car seats for their children. The program is part of the Safety First Regional Car Seat Campaign 2014.
Healthy Families Rappahannock Area will distribute the car seats to local Medicaid families from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 31.

The National Park Service will host the 19th annual Fredericksburg National Cemetery Luminary on Saturday, May 24, 2014.
A luminary will be lit for each of the 15,300 soldiers buried there.
The Fredericksburg National Cemetery Luminary is open to the public 8 p.m. – 11 p.m. In the event of rain, the event will be held on Sunday, May 25.

Two upcoming events will highlight the beauty of the Rappahannock River and benefit Friends of the Rappahannock (FOR).

The Fredericksburg Jaycees will host their 38th annual Rappahannock River Raft Race on July 4, 2014.
The race begins at 11:30 a.m. at Falmouth Waterfront Park, 313 River Rd, Fredericksburg, and ends at Fredericksburg City Dock, 207 Sophia St. Spectators may watch at beginning and end, and also view the rafts from Chatham Bridge, where Rt. 3 crosses the Rappahannock between Fredericksburg and Stafford County.
A public visitation for Makayla Nicole Carter will be held 6 – 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, at Laurel Hill Funeral Home, 10127 Plank Road in Spotsylvania.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 10, at the funeral home chapel, with interment in Laurel Hill Memorial Park, 10127 Plank Road Spotsylvania.
Makayla, 7, drowned July 4 at the Lake Wilderness subdivision of Spotsylvania County.
Two GoFundMe campaigns have been established to support MaKayla’s family and help with funeral costs.

Greater Fredericksburg Habitat for Humanity (GFHFH) is celebrating 19-years of service with an 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. sale on Friday, July 11, at their ReStore, 4755 Jefferson Davis Hwy.
Central Rappahannock Regional Library presents two hands-on make and take sessions for all-natural cleaning products.
The first is 2 – 4 p.m. Thursday, July 17, at Salem Church Branch, 2607 Salem Church Rd., Fredericksburg.
The second is 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Saturday, July 19, at England Run Branch, 806 Lyons Blvd., Fredereicksburg.
The workshops are free.

The Fredericksburg Area Food Bank relies on donations. On August 5, Sarah Rosenbaum donated 48 pounds of food to the local nonprofit. What made this donation special was that Sarah raised the money to purchase the food — $61 — at a lemonade stand.
From 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturday, August 9, the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank is sponsoring a Food-4-Families Stock the School Pantry Food Drive. The food drive will take place at Celebrate Virginia Giant Food, 550 Celebrate Virginia Pkwy., Fredericksburg.

Mastery Gunnery Sgt. John H. Deters received a surprise for his 88th birthday on August 2, 2014. Marines from MCB Quantico visited the World War II veteran at his Fredericksburg nursing home.

Fredericksburg Parks & Recreation is hosting a local #ALSIceBucketChallenge to raise money and awareness for ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The event will take at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 3, Dixon Park Pool, 1300 Dixon St., Fredericksburg.
More than 100 first-year University of Mary Washington (UMW) students worked with Tree Fredericksburg, the Department of Public Works, and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Public Facilities to mulch portions of the Heritage Trail. View the entire photo...
Rappahannock Adult Activities (RAAI) is hosting their third annual fall plant sale through October 3 at their 750 Kings Hwy. location in Fredericksburg. Sale hours are 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Pansies, chrysanthemums and a limited selection of herbs are available.
RAAI participants are responsible for the initial planting, placing labels on the pots, daily watering and plant care. They will also be selling the plants and assisting to load the plants in customers’ vehicles.

The Massad Family YMCA is sponsoring a benefit for the wife and child of fallen Marine Sgt. Charles Strong. Sgt. Strong, a member of the Corps’ elite special command, was killed in Herat Province, Afghanistan, on September 15.
